Hypnotherapy for Kids and Teens is a fun, safe and positive experience. When in a hypnotic state, because children have a powerful sense of imagination, their minds are more creative and receptive to positive suggestions enabling them to find creative and beneficial solutions to difficult situations and overcome their problems.
Some of the problems I deal with are:
Can children be hypnotised?
Children enter a very light state of hypnosis – a kind of a ‘day dreamy' state in which they are encouraged to relax and not fall sleep. This state is a natural state, which children experience regularly throughout the day; when they are waking from sleep or falling asleep, or just becoming absorbed in thought or in imaginative play.
How does the process work?
Children from ten upwards are usually quite happy closing their eyes and relaxing.
Younger children may be reluctant to close their eyes and do not necessarily relax in the way that adults do. Rather guided by the therapist, they are encouraged to actively engage with their imagination in a positive way in order to help them overcome their problems.
Often children will talk about what they experience during the process and at times will even move about. All of this only helps them to become fully involved in the imaginative process, as they would do when engaged in imaginative or pretend play.
Can parents stay for the sessions?
Parents are always encouraged to stay in the room, especially for the first session, so that the child will feel more at ease. This also gives the parent the opportunity to see how the process works.
Older children often prefer to be on left their own so they will not be distracted or feel that are being observed. Some younger children are also quite happy on their own after a first or second session.
It is best to chat with your child in order to determine their preferences. Remember that children mature quite differently.
What happens in the sessions?
Firstly, we will discuss the issue/problem that they have. We will explore how they would prefer to think, feel and behave instead.
We will also explore the qualities they already have, helping them to realise that they can be optimistic, courageous, confident and calm in other situations, therefore empowering them with the ability to make positive changes in order to overcome their problems. We will also look at strategies that they can use to help them cope better.
I will then help them to relax, and engage in the imaginative journey that will help them to easily access the positive qualities they have as well as explore strategies they can use to help them cope better and overcome their problems.
